Search engine indexing reviewed after the Search Console alerts on the official site: Google did not index forum topics or wiki pages, and was offered empty pages. And the welcome message, which was no longer sent.
Fixed
- Language-less content no longer presents itself as duplicates: a forum topic, a wiki page, a ticket, an event,
a classified ad, a recipe, a survey, a job offer, an award, a donation campaign — written once — answered under each
of the site's languages, only the menus translated, and every address declared itself canonical. Google picked
another one and indexed none of them ("Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user": on the official site,
in six languages, 59 pieces of content listed six times, 354 of the 580 addresses in its sitemap). Their canonical is
now in the site's first language, the only one announced in
hreflangand in the sitemap. The same goes for the pages made of such content: the FAQ, the glossary, quotes, links, downloads, the shop and the event list. - Empty pages are no longer offered to search engines: the web radio with no stream or show, the guestbook with no
message and the donations page with no campaign were in the sitemap, in every language — "soft 404s" for Google.
They are left out while empty, and declare
noindex. /fr/forum/now redirects permanently to/fr/forum: the redirect of an address ending with a slash, or with a doubled one, was temporary (302) — and the first one dropped everything after the?; it is now permanent (301) and keeps the end of the address.- The welcome message is sent again: the Members module could not find the messaging module, and a new member
received nothing. A module loading another one (
$this->module(…)) always got "nothing" — the same defect deprived comment webhooks of the title and address of the commented content. - Update backups no longer pile up: the site always keeps the five most recent ones and removes the others after thirty days, but closely spaced updates let them all through — the official site carried forty, 663 MB. No more than ten ever remain now, whatever their age.
Changed
check-seocompares languages with each other: it samples the same path in each sitemap and reports the same text served under several languages, each one canonical. It declared the official site sound; it now finds these duplicates there. A module can declare its language-less content: a sitemap entry marked'sans_langue' => TRUEis only listed in the first language's sitemap, andnf_seo_sans_langue()sets the page's canonical ("Create a module" guide).
